Astor House Hotel in Shanghai, formerly known as Richard's Hotel was established in 1846, during the Qing Dynasty Daoguang period that lasted for 26 years. Founded by the Richard's family, this was the very first western hotel property that came up in China after Shanghai became a trading port. The present Location of Astor House Hotel in Shanghai is not the same as its original location at Shanghai bund near Wangpoo River. In the year 1857, the hotel was moved to where it stands now, the north end of Baidu Bridge and was renamed as Astor House Hotel.
In the year 1907(Qing Dynasty,Guangxu period), the hotel was extended to an England new classical style building. Even after years of renovation, this hotel proudly stands as an epitome of the rich architectural legacy and historical past of the city of Shanghai.
